General policy

The BNU is a specialized institution, at the same time a public library for experienced users and a scientific library for researchers; it also has the special mission of conserving the regional written heritage (legal deposit.)

The Library serves a double purpose: On the one hand are the core of excellence centres (Religious Sciences, German culture of the area, Alsatian Heritage, European issues and Antiquity,) of which some are considered on a national level and for which the BNU has acquired a vast and specialized documentation for research purposes; and on the other hand are the advanced multidisciplinary collections that make up the base of the human and social sciences research library.

The entire range of disciplines is covered by the BNU with the exception of Science and Technology, Medicine, and Pharmacy, for which the library is acquiring quality works for laymen.

In Human and Social Sciences, the BNU is, on the one hand acquiring both general and specialized bibliographic tools, reference works, and major treatises, and on the other hand, basic research works meant for a wide public.

Almost half of the acquisitions are in the foreign domain, with an excellent coverage of Germanic and Central and Eastern European countries.

The electronic documentation is in full expansion: The BNU provides electronic acces to close to 14,000 periodicals or data bases.
