National collections
Since its creation, the BNU has particularly emphasized ancient history, archaeology, and language; all essential research areas at Strasbourg University from the 19th Century on.
The pre-1920 BNU collections comprise about 60,000 titles in this area:
-
Greek and Latin Philology: 32,500 titles
-
Other ancient languages and literature (Semitic languages, Sanskrit, Egyptian languages, Assyrian, ancient Persian, etc.): 12,300 titles
-
Ancient History, Archaeology and Art: 15,200 titles
In addition to the printed documentation, let us remind you that the Library has specialized collections in: papyrus, currencies, Egyptian ostraca, cuneiform tablets, etc.
Current acquisitions
Today, in this department, the BNU annually acquires 700 monographs (400 of which are foreign works), and subscribes to: 163 printed periodical titles (126 of which are foreign language periodicals), 20 electronic periodicals, and 10 data bases.
The most well represented disciplines include the History of Greco-Roman and Near East Archaeology, Egyptology, Ancient Religions, Greek and Latin languages and literature.
Collections of Ancient Near East languages and literature are limited but still not insignificant.
The BNU collections on Antiquity (130,500 monographs and more than 1,700 periodicals both current and out of print) added to the already very rich SCD university libraries make Strasbourg an exceptionally valuable documentary reservoir for students, doctoral students, university teaching staff and students and researchers in antiquity as well as numerous readers, non-specialists but ancient history and literature lovers all the same.
