The Arts

The latest acquisitions

National collections

In 1920, the art-related collection amounted to about 60,000 volumes. A loyal reflection of the culture at the time, (and of the Library’s history), this collection was dominated by works on art in German countries, but not exclusively; France is also represented and the geographic coverage is rather vast, often going past the borders of the Western world. Polls taken on the usual artistic bibliographies at the beginning of the century show that, at the time, the Library bought close to 50% of the inventoried production, all countries mixed.

The acquisitions policy did not fundamentally change once Alsace re-became French; it has, for all intents and purposes, remained loyal to the characteristics of its very first collections. Thus, the BNU is today, without a doubt, with the BnF, the richest source in France of Art from German countries. It is also a great encyclopaedic library, where all artistic and musical branches are represented.

Current acquisitions

The BNU’s current acquisitions in the area of the arts strive to follow the mode without discrimination to a period or country. This policy meets the diverse needs of the Library readership, composed of: students and researchers in Art History, students from architectural and decorative arts schools, musicology students and musicians, without forgetting the non-academic public, a non-negligible population for the BNU. Because of this generalist spirit, acquisitions in the artistic department have always had an encyclopaedic nature.

For the whole range of arts, including music, the BNU adds about 1,500 titles to its art-related collections annually, 600 of which are related to art in German countries. At the moment, it offers close to 200 art-related periodicals.

The works acquired run the gamut of the Arts and of course include music-related subjects as well as the following highlights:

  • Arts from German countries (well represented as well in the current German book collections.)

  • Architecture, urbanism, gardening art

  • Cinéma and the performing arts

  • Primitive arts

  • Art in non-European countries

  • Youth art, street art

  • Photography

  • Popular music
