The history of its creation and the very nature of its collections have had a considerable effect on the BNU's dynamic approach to international relations. The quantity of correspondence between directors and subsequently administrators of the library and a good number of diplomats is witness to the institution's activity in this area.
The BNU is currently involved in international partnerships and networks that make it possible to set up projects based on documentation, its enhancement and its access.
When the BNU sets ups the international exhibitions it hosts, it also sets up partnerships with scientific and cultural institutions outside France, and these partnerships generally continue in the form of long-term cooperation.
In this way it has developed a special relationship with the library of the Land of Baden-Württemberg (Württembergische Landesbibliothek), with which it signed an agreement on 12 November 2008 emphasising the desire of the two institutions to cooperate actively in the sharing of professional information, working together on cultural action, etc.
More generally, the Germanic cultural area is de facto a geographical area that the BNU has a natural vocation to join. Thus the library is, for instance, one of the members of the libraries section of the European Confederation of the Upper Rhine Universities (EUCOR).
On a wider horizon, the BNU also looks to the countries of central and southern Europe and to Russia. During Franco-Russian Year in 2010, similar collaboration was set up between the BNU, the Pushkin State Museum in Moscow and the Pushkin National Museum in St Petersburg, with the support of a number of diplomatic institutions. As part of this movement towards developing and consolidating relations with national documentary institutions, a partnership is currently being developed between the BNU and the National Library of Latvia.
